The state of Florida has documented 500+ species of non-native fish and wildlife and 1,180+ species of plants inside it’s borders. Most alien species die shortly after they arrive. Some species, for a time, are able to blend in and exist alongside their indigenous neighbors. A tiny fraction grow, thrive, and flourish. Their status is elevated from “non-native” to “invasive” and their eradication becomes the burden of the state. Florida’s estimated annual agricultural loss from invasive species is in excess of $90,000,000.
